Fish oil

Content reviewed:

Ingredient information is not a product efficacy study. A publication, traditional use or a link to an ingredient does not authorise a health claim. [4]

Identity & classification

A mixture of lipids from fish; fish-oil weight is not the same as combined EPA and DHA weight. [1] [2]

Natural origin

Marine food chains contain EPA and DHA originally produced by microalgae. Fish accumulate these fatty acids through their diet. [1] [2]

History & background

Fish oils are established food-supplement ingredients; modern formulations distinguish total oil from individual fatty acids. [1] [2]

Production methods

Oil is separated and refined; concentration and conversion can yield different lipid forms. The fish species, fishery, purification method, oxidation testing and lipid form of this FitGirl oil are not confirmed. [1] [2]

FitGirl raw material: the supplier, country of origin, batch specification and manufacturing process have not been independently verified. General production methods below do not establish the origin of this product.

Nutritional properties

Read EPA and DHA separately. They are long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids; ALA is a different omega-3 fatty acid. [1] [2]

Food & sports nutrition

The daily portion and fish allergen declaration matter more than the large oil-weight number on the front of a jar. [1] [2]

Research & limitations

Different oils, doses and populations are not interchangeable. A paper about omega-3 does not establish a benefit of every fish-oil product. [1] [2]

Approved health claims

The EPA/DHA heart claim requires at least 40 mg EPA+DHA per 100 g and per 100 kcal, with information that the effect is obtained at 250 mg EPA+DHA daily. DHA brain/vision claims require at least 40 mg DHA per 100 g and per 100 kcal and the 250 mg DHA daily statement. Daily dose alone does not verify these concentration conditions. No positive claim is activated for the linked FitGirl product pending those checks. [3] [4] [5]
